What’s In Your Branding Toolbox?

In my hall closet at home, there’s a shiny red metal toolbox outfitted with hammer, level, screwdrivers, etc. I’m not a Handyman, yet it’s invaluable on those occasions when I’m hanging a new picture or the repair guy forgets his pliers. Just as handy is a toolbox of specific items needed for marketing and promoting your business.

With the right tools at your fingertips, you expand your marketing reach while your business takes on a more consistent and professional look. Taking time now to gather key files in a folder labeled Branding Toolbox on your computer, saves you time later when last-minute marketing needs arise.

As a business owner, how many times have you missed an opportunity to place an ad or display a profile photo because the requirements were too time-consuming? Next time, have your basic Branding Toolbox stocked with files for your:

  • Logo
  • Headshot
  • Company Name and Tag Line
  • Name and Title
  • Email Address
  • Phone/Fax
  • Social Media Addresses
  • Elevator Speech
  • Bio
  • Press Release
  • Infomercial Video

Graphic files for your logo and headshot are key components. But, here’s the catch—one file for each is not sufficient!

Have you ever struggled to upload an image that is too big? Or printed an image that turns out blurry? When it comes to graphics, did you know you need TWO versions?

  1. Online Version: a smaller file, low-resolution or 72 dpi, for display on email, websites, social media or anything online.
  2. Print Version: a larger file, high-resolution or 300 dpi in 4-color, for anything you are printing.

When you are working with a photographer or graphic designer, be sure to ask for both versions to place in your toolbox. Label these files appropriately (e.g., “logo print” and “logo online”) for easy reference later.

The other items on the list are text files. Store them in PDF file format to prevent accidental edits. For your bio, it’s a good idea to be prepared by creating both short and longer versions.

With your Branding Toolbox in place, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to respond to marketing opportunities and create more professional in-house materials for clients and prospects.
